CHAPTER TEN

My mother had assured me at least a half dozen times that there were no untoward people at my apartment, and that Brennan wouldn’t be clued in to anything by my going back home. But I timed our visit to make sure he’d be at work, anyway.

After all, Brennan still thought I was in Hawaii with my sister. If he saw me standing outside our apartment, or worse—in it along with two strange men he’d never seen before—he’d be justifiably upset, and I’d have to come up with an explanation real fast. And I just wasn’t that good of a liar.

I glanced down at my phone. Why hadn’t I called or texted Brennan in the last day and a half to let him know I was okay? Sure, I’d been busy with the lighthouse and Val and my mother, but there’d been plenty of downtime, too, in the car, when I could have called or texted and at least told him I was okay, if not what I was doing.

But I hadn’t. I hadn’t said anything at all to him in the last day and a half. Of course, he hadn’t, either, but that wasn’t the point.

Quickly, I unlocked my phone and sent him a quick text. Miss you, sweetie. Everything’s great in Hawaii. Should be home in a couple days.

The last part was true, at least. I only had another day and a half to find this artifact. Assuming I found it, I’d return home after and hopefully put this whole sordid episode long behind me. And if I didn’t? Well, I’d still be coming home, just without a sister. If the Hand let me live, of course.

If they didn’t, a broken promise to Brennan was the least of my worries. So the text felt like a safe play.

I waited a few moments for him to reply. To say anything, but nothing came of it. Of course, he was at work, and he was very busy at his job, so there was a good chance he hadn’t seen it yet. I stared wistfully at my phone for another moment anyway before I put it away.

At about the same time, Damian was fussing with the radio dial. The radio had been playing I Want it That Way by the Backstreet Boys. One of my jams, so I was a bit annoyed.

“There we go!” Damian said while twisting the dial. “That’s more like it.”

Now the radio was playing some random song from the 80s. I think it was Twisted Sister, but I wasn’t completely sure. I’d never been as into 80s rock as I was the later stuff.

I rolled my eyes. “Turn it back. The 90s are better than the 80s anyway.”

Damian scoffed and put a hand on his chest. “Oh, you wound me, Misty. First Star Wars, and now you insult the 80s?”

“Face it, bub. My decade is just better than yours. It’s as simple as that.”

Damian glared at me. “And I suppose you think the Macarena is better
